As the name suggests, Los Canales is a large network of canals, a mixture of natural and man made, totalling over 100km.
The Los Canales area is located in the state of Miranda, and includes the two towns of San Jose and Rio Chico.
Historically, the area was a large producer of cacao, and there are a number of plantations and chocolate factories which
can be visited today.
The area is also well known amongst the worldwide fishing community, as being a top destination for sport fishermen. It is
famous for its tarpon, snook and marlin among others.
Los Canales enjoys a sunny climate year round, and is easily accessed from Caracas, the drive takes around 2 hours. For
these reasons, the area is very popular with Caracas residents, many of whom own second homes here, and visit at
weekends and during holiday periods. The canals are lined with houses and apartment complexes.
The canals offer great opportunities for water sports, from recreational boating, to kayaking, water skiing, jet skiing and wake
boarding. There is also a very good 18 hole golf course.
The town of Rio Chico offers good amenities, there are restaurants, bars, banks, supermarkets, pharmacies and plenty of
additional shops and services.

Just a 20 minute drive from Rio Chico is
National Park Tacarigua La Laguna.
Here the wildlife abounds - herons, scarlet ibis, caiman crocodiles, many fish species, and a turtle nesting site. You can take
a stunning boat ride through mangrove tunnels, and then relax at one of the private beaches.
